How To Move Without Going Broke

Posted on: 19 April 2016

If you are planning to move, you might find yourself worried about the cost of it all. However, if you take advantage of the following tips, you might be able to save some money.

Find Some Free Boxes

There is no need to spend a lot of money on the purchase of cardboard boxes if you are able to get them for free. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can look on local advertising or social media sites for your hometown and look for people who are giving boxes away. Some people will list that they have free boxes available because they may have just moved and would like to help someone else out. You can also talk to the managers of your local dollar, grocery, and department stores. Ask when their delivery days are and if you can have their empty boxes when they are done with them.

Gather Free Packing Supplies

You need to make sure that all of your glasses, dishes, fragile decorations, and glass pictures are not going to become broken during the move. Therefore, you will want to wrap such items in bubble wrap or surround them with foam peanuts. You might be able to find people giving away their free packing supplies instead of simply throwing them out in the garbage. This allows you to get the materials you need without having to spend a lot of money to do it. You can also use some of your sweaters, thin blankets, sheets, bath towels, and curtains to wrap a lot of your fragile items in. After all, all of those things have to go to the new location anyways.

Move During The Week

There are a lot of moving truck rental companies that will charge slightly higher rates on the weekends. Therefore, if it is possibly to rearrange your schedule, you might want to do so in order to move everything during the week. Also, depending on where you are moving, you might not have to deal with all of the weekend traffic, which can be difficult when you are trying to maneuver around a busy city in a large moving truck. You might also want to look for any coupons that you can clip from the newspaper or print from a company website, as that can save you even more money.

With those three tips in mind, you should find that moving truly does not have to be something that costs an arm and a leg. Just take advantage of this advice and you might just find that you have a little money leftover from the entire journey.
